Genetically Engineered to be Brave and Free

I'm just going to go all out from the beginning and start with a nice WTF ('What the FUCK?' to the lesser foul-mouthed amongst you)?!

Is this how my new homeland views itself?  Didn't our boy Don (Draper, keep up) say something along these lines re advertising?

Ah yes, here we go, the gods of Google have spoken:

Don Draper:  "Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And do you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It's freedom from fear. It's a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you're doing is OK. You are OK."

So what, prey tell, does this:

say about the American people?

Because brain-washed to be brave and free springs to mind.  Remember Dodge?

Applying the Draper theory then (coming to a university near you soon...), I would wager that every American that reads this ad is sitting somewhere in his car alone trapped on the 405 and shitting himself (= English expression for fear) about the state of the economy.  There's nothing Brave or Free about it...
